Pralognan-la-Vanoise

Get to know Pralognan-la-Vanoise

Pralognan is probably one of my favourite places in the French Alps. Its not flashy, and its not huge. If big Apres scenes and huge ski areas are your thing this probably isn't the resort for you. However what Pralognan does have is real charm. Its a small village that is very popular with the French, especially families. The lift area is small due to the village sitting right on the border of the Vanoise National Park. But this means if you enjoy ski touring the terrain is endless. With such large mountains around (including the Grande Casse, the areas highest peak) Pralognan doesn't get much sun during the winter. Snow stays a long time here and this allows it to boast the 4th largest cross country skiing area in France with some fantastic routes for all abilities.

More about Pralognan-la-Vanoise

A savoyard gem hidden away from the crowds

Pralognan-la-Vanoise is a traditional Alpine village in the Savoie region of southeastern France, tucked at 1,410 meters in the heart of the Vanoise massif. Historically, it was a small mountain farming community, living from agriculture, livestock, and seasonal migration. In the 19th century, with the rise of alpinism, Pralognan became a gateway for mountaineers aiming to climb iconic peaks like the Grande Casse, the highest summit in the Vanoise (3,855 m). Early tourism developed around mountaineering and spa culture, and unlike many purpose-built resorts, Pralognan has retained its authentic village character. The village sits within the Vanoise National Park, France’s first national park, created in 1963 to protect the Alpine ibex, which was once nearly extinct. The park is known for its dramatic glaciers, high-altitude lakes, and rich biodiversity, including chamois, marmots, and golden eagles. In winter, the landscape becomes a quiet expanse of snow-covered forests and peaks, offering a sense of preserved wilderness rare in large ski areas. Skiing in Pralognan is intimate and family-oriented. The alpine ski area rises to about 2,350 meters, offering a mix of gentle beginner slopes and more technical runs, all with stunning mountain views. It is especially known for its peaceful atmosphere and lack of crowds compared to larger neighboring resorts. Cross-country skiing is also popular, with scenic Nordic trails running through the valley floor along the river and into wooded areas. Overall, Pralognan combines authentic Savoyard heritage, protected natural beauty, and relaxed skiing in a uniquely alpine setting.
