Why we love Megeve
The historic village of Megeve is a gem tucked away in the Mont Blanc mountain range just an hour from Geneva airport. Originally a small farming town, there is now 400km of varied terrain across two ski areas, ranging from challenging moguls, to gentle runs through fir-tree forests.
Not only are there more than 200 pistes but there is fantastic Nordic terrain, an Olympic sized ice rink, and a 3000m long sledge track to pique your interest.
Megeve is much more than just a ski resort; with a distinct air of refinement, it is renowned for its gastronomy, boutique shops, and distinguished après scene which includes the Folie Douce.
Skiing in Megeve
The Megeve ski area is great for all levels of skiing (and snowboarding) ability. You have around 400km of piste to explore on the area pass or 100km on just the local pass. So there’s plenty to explore.
The mountains are split into zone like areas so you could explore a different area each day. Just be aware there are a few drag lift connections - fine for skiers but can be tricky for beginner boarders.
Plus when fresh snow falls, the gnarly riders head to nearby Chamonix leaving Megeve’s slopes peacefully quiet and full of untouched powder.
Crowdless slopes
Megeve is quiet, if you’re looking to avoid the crowds and lift-queues then this is the place. Yes it can get busy on the weekend with crowds coming in from Geneva and also at peak holiday times as it’s popular with families.
Outside the core dates it’s blissfully crowdless. There are no (or very few) bottlenecks so you won’t get stuck in lift queues. Even though the lifts aren’t the fastest.
There is heaps of space on the slopes and you’ll find fantastic views of Mont Blanc all over the place. With a medieval town, full of cobbled streets and amazing restaurants to head back to at the end of the day.
Après ski in Megeve
Traditionally Megeve has a more sophisticated apres scene than the table dancing and euro pop blaring younger resorts. You’re more likely to come across a nice Jazz bar or cocktails on the terrace than DJs and rowdy dancing. There are plenty of great places to stop for a sunset drink on your way back to town.
The recent-ish addition of a Folie Douce in Megeve means that those looking for a wild post-ski bash get exactly that. At the top of the Mont Joux lift it’s easy to access the open air dance floor and table dancing if you want to.
Hidden gems
Best Bite
Looking for star status? Then both Flocons de Sel and 1920 have Michelin stars and are a great option back in town.
Best piste
If you’re finding your ski legs then the top to bottom green slopes, Rochebrune is a great place to escape the lower slopes and get some great views whilst you learn.
Apres Ski
La Folie Douce is the stand out, end of the day, up on the mountain après haunt. Though the famous Cinq Rues Jazz Bar is the popular late night spot.
