This vibrant resort town is a popular area due to its snow reliability and high altitude, sun drenched slopes. The resort has something for everyone, but beginners will be happy with what's on offer directly above the town in the form of gentle green runs and fast chairlifts. More advanced skiers aren't left behind thanks to a host of high altitude pistes stretching all the way up to the Pic Blanc glacier at 3300m creating a giant playground of open slopes. The town is an outdoor paradise with a multitude of activities on offer including an ice rink, cross country skiing and outdoor swimming pool.
The resort is well known for its lively apres ski scene which starts on the slopes. The Marmottes 1 chairlift is home to the La Folie Douce bar for some on snow entertainment or head to town to the Freeride cafe for an old school resort bar feel, frequented by locals and holiday makers alike. The resort is spread out with many lifts, so keep an eye out for the regular shuttle buses or plan which lift to start your day from.
Train is a great way to travel to Alpe d'Huez. You can get the Eurostar to Paris and the TGV down to Grenoble and then you can hop on a bus or grab a taxi to Alpe d'Huez. It normally takes a couple hours longer door to door than flying but can be a much more chill experience and you've got no baggage limits so can be great if you have your own skis. Chambery is a little further at 1 hour 45 minutes and Lyon is 2 hours away. But arguably your best option is Geneva, it's a little further at 2 hours 40 minutes but you have far more flight and transfer options from here. Alpe d'Huez is nicknamed 'The Island in the Sun' with it's South facing slopes getting over 300 days of sunshine each year. There's no freezing shade skiing here! Folie Douce is right at the top of the Marmottes 1 ski lift perfect for soaking up the sun and dancing on the tables with stunning views to boot.
La Sarenne is the longest black run in the world at a leg burning 16km. Though you can skip the steepest top section and join further down if you don't normally ski blacks.
